The Blues Factory was extremely lucky to have Thailand’s
greatest ever guitarist, the one and only Lam Morrison. And this section is dedecated to him as thanks for his help at The Blues Factory
Lam started playing guitar when he was 13 years old
after teaching himself on an acoustic guitar. Later
he formed a band called The VIP group and toured around
the air bases playing for the US forces during the Vietnam
War in the late 60’s.
After the war, because the band was very rock oriented
with a very unique sound called “underground music”
The VIP group found it very hard to get well attended
gigs in Thailand as Thai people hadn’t really
cottoned onto Rock and Roll. Luckily at one gig in Bangkok
a German tourist was in the audience persuaded Lam to
go to Germany with him, He went and played all over
Germany. Whilst in Germany he won a guitar duelling
competition and earned himself the “guitar king”
title. He then toured in countries like Switzerland,
Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, France and then over
to North America.
On his return to Thailand he was signed by EMI music
Thailand and released his first album, “Night
in Bangkok” which sold 1 million copies, the first
ever rock album in Thailand to reach sales of this size.
After the release he was sponsored by EMI music and
went back to Europe and toured with famous bands like
deep purple and UFO, during this time befriended musical
greats like Ritchie Blackmore.
On his return to Thailand a lot of new musicians had
emerged and musical styles had changed and Lam settled
down doing various gigs, appearances and concerts including
may with the superstar band “Carabao”.
Lam is a master of lead and bass guitars, piano and
the harmonica as well as having a great singing voice.
He was influenced by musicians and bands including Jimmi
Hendrix, Mark Knopfler, Rory Gallagher, Chuck Berry,
Ritchie Blackmore, Jeff Beck to name just a few. Lam
also enjoys playing classical greats like Beethoven
no 5 and 6 on his guitar.
Lam Morrison honoured us by playing in The Blues Factory
in late 2002 until 2007 where he has opened his own pub " The Lam Morrison rock pub which is located just around the corner from The Blues Factory.
Lam still visits us some nights so if your lucky you might still catch him on stage. |
